The Sneakerhead bag is said to have been inspired by a young designer Cierra Boyd who creates handmade intricate dressers from trainers and is a self-proclaimed ‘sustainability junkie’. The fashion engineer has been featured on the likes of Vogue, Nylon magazine Hypebae as well as having designs worn by various stars such as Saweetie and winner of Ru pauls drag race season 13 Symone.
Balenciaga are yet to state that the Sneakerhead bag was inspired by Cierra Boyd however fans of the designer are suspecting she could be part of the inspiration.
Balenciaga is In competition with Alexander wang who also experimented with a similar concept releasing a trainer inspired handbag collection in 2015.
The experimental bag retails for $2,750
The bag is a nod to the DIY fashion trend that has appeared during the pandemic. With people having been at so home so much, many designers have had a chance to get creative and it’s caught on. Many high fashion brands have attempted to imitate the DIY aesthetic and fans are loving it.
However, this leaves a few questions to be asked. Are the true originators of these trends been credited? Are they receiving their earned benefits from high-end brands making millions off of smaller designers ideas? Secondly, are we truly embracing sustainable ways of making clothes or have we just made it an aesthetic without the actually environmental consideration?
The Sneakerhead bag is available to purchase on Balenciaga stores
