Kerby Jean-Raymond the designer known for using his brand Pyer Moss to stand for racial equality as well as storytelling through his fashion shows is back for this year’s fall couture show. The show dedicated its creations to black excellence. Showcasing the many innovations created by black people that have often gone unrecognised. The show took place in his hometown of New York at the Villa Lewaro also known as Madam CJ Walker’s estate. The estate was the perfect location for the show and represented all that Pyer Moss believes in. The residence embodies the optimism and perseverance of the American entrepreneurial spirit.

Madam C.J Walker was and still is one of the most influential black women in business.

Her perseverance and business acumen led her to become America’s first self-made millionaire. She achieved her millions through her hair care and beauty company designed for black women in a time where products for black women were few and far between. Her incredible life has been documented by many including Netflix who released a series titled Self Made inspired by the life Madam C.J Walker lived.

Always ready to send a strong message the running theme for the Pyer Moss show was “Wat U Iz”. Kerby Jean Raymond has been known to disrupt the fashion industry and as the first black designer to showcase his work at Paris Couture week the pressure was on and he exceeded expectations while still staying true to the brand’s roots.

“These are inventions by Black people and I wanted to reintroduce them to Black people, reverse the erasure that may exist—and to troll a little bit, too,” Jean-Raymond said after the show.

The fashion world has been in desperate need of disruptive fashion often lacking in diversity. Designers like Kerby Jean Raymond are shaping the future of couture fashion and showing the world fashion isn’t just frivolous but can be used as a vehicle for social justice and a way to tell impactful stories.
