Drake & Kanye’s album feud, the perfect marketing ploy
Mayfield Ngondonga
September 16, 2021Drake and Kanye have found themselves in a musical battle as their albums have clashed this summer. Both artists have had fans dying for an album so the pressure to fulfil expectations was on.
Having released their albums just 5 days apart critics and the media were ready to compare the two.
With both stars having large and incredibly strong fandoms that align it seemed a little pointless to compare the two talented artists who both bring different sounds and entirely different vibes in their albums.
On the 29th of August Kanye released his latest album Donda. The album was long-awaited as fans looked forward to seeing how Kanye’s sound had changed after so much had changed in his life. Donda speaks alot about God and his perspective on how he lives life now he is a follower of Christ. Although the content within the album is very different it somewhat feels like the old Kanye had come back with a positive twist.
Which album is better? Which one will age better? Which one will sell more? These are the questions on everyone’s mind.
Drake & Kanye’s sales
According to MRC data Drake’s sixth studio album Certified Lover Boy got 613,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. for the week ending Sept. 9 giving him the biggest sales made in a week for over a year in the US. previously Kanye now known as Ye had the biggest week earlier this year. However, Drake doubled Ye’s Donda numbers this time around. Kanye’s second-week sales numbers climbed up with 146k sales.
Although sales matter in the present ultimately time will tell who’s album will create a legacy and still be praised in years to come. In this generation of new music being pumped out like crazy. With new tunes and artists are coming out and going out just as fast, music that leaves a legacy is hard to come by as more and more artists are focusing on immediate fame, going viral on Tik Tok and being all the rage for as long as they can last. Both Kanye and Drake’s previous albums will go down in history and age like fine wine, making them legends of our time however the pressure to keep their legacy has music fans eagerly judging their latest albums and still wanting more.
