Meet Jay-Ann Lopez, the founder of Black Girl Gamers, a platform and safe space online that increases the visibility of black women in the gaming world and upholds inclusion and diversity. Since beginning the company, the entrepreneur partnered up with Facebook, V&A Museum, Belong Gaming Arenas, and many more to organise events that place emphasis on the necessity for inclusion in the industry.

As an entrepreneur with a mission to empower women, Lopez also co-founded Curlture in 2018, a platform made to champion natural beauty and hair through travel and lifestyle topics. With both liberating businesses under her wing, Lopez has won multiple awards due to her efforts and has been asked to speak at Microsoft, Twitter, Microsoft, and Unilever, whilst being featured on major media publications.

With a community orientated mother, Lopez learnt to combat negativity with her mother’s motto; ‘This is how the world reacts to you, but this is not who you are. You are more than whatever characteristics they try to associate with your beautiful skin.’

As a child, Lopez played a lot of video games but was sick of the many sexist and racist comments she received which was one of the reasons she decided to diversify the gaming industry.

Now with a large community of followers on her social media, the entrepreneur hosts events to offer mentoring and advice for women looking to change the industry whether that’s through content creation, gaming development or events.

‘I’d like to see more diversity in organizations—women in general at the helm of gaming companies.’
