Twenty-two-year-old, Rose Dyson began her entrepreneurial journey at only fifteen, when entering a school competition named ‘I Know I Can’, where contestants had to start up their own business with just twenty-five pounds.

As a big lover of beauty products and a frustration for expensive ethical cosmetics, Dyson founded Pura Cosmetics, a vegan and cruelty free cosmetics line.

‘I was shocked and frustrated when the products with the values that aligned with mine proved expensive and out-of-reach for my pocket money. It seemed to me that if you wanted to access the ethics, you had to pay a premium price tag; I knew this needed to change and a solution to this issue was needed.’

Later down the line, Dyson won funding from iconic UK businesses and took a ten-thousand-pound investment after winning the ’20 Under 20’ competition for fintech. Now with more than a hundred thousand pounds a year in revenue, business is thriving for Dyson with a growing following on social media.

What to take away from Dyson’s experiences?

Do your research. Be original. Provide a solution.

‘My advice to anyone starting a business in general, would be to be do as much research as you can before anything, ensure you have a point of difference and are providing a solution to a real pain point for consumers, as markets are incredibly competitive.’

Dyson believes the businesses that are most successful include creativity, original content and has an interactive element. Start-ups that entertain, educate and offer a solution are the ones that are going to grow more rapidly.
