June 1, 2021Emerging artist, Amber Donoso, creates a new wave in the music industry, as she combines her Latin and British heritage to produce her new single ‘Candela’, that was released on the 30thApril. We caught up with the twenty-five-year-old reggaeton artist to explore how Donoso began in the industry and her inspiration behind the music, whilst discussing the ultimate goal for the young singer.
With a Chilean father and a British mother, Donoso spent time split between a South American farm and city life in London, which heavily inspired her music. ‘I listened to a lot of different styles of music. So, I grew up listening to a lot of reggaeton, but I also grew up listening to a lot of soul pop in the indie rock, but I think kind of my soul influences I have different influences for different things.’
The loss of Donoso’s father at the age of ten, led her to making music as a way of working through her grief. ‘I knew at that moment that I wanted to be an artist. That’s why I started music. It was kind of I put my pain into music into making music.’ Initially, Donoso shared acoustic music on YouTube and other online platforms but was still trying to find her individual sound that stood out from other artists. ‘It was me, like, still trying to find out like, what was gonna be my USP, what was going to make me different.’
First scouted as a model at thirteen and signed at sixteen to the new faces board for two years, Donoso progressed as an artist model for special bookings in the final year. Fashion was a form of expression for Donoso which also enabled her to follow her passion for music. ‘I’d got the finances which I wanted to help back my music and I wanted my full focus to be a music. I was able to get that. So, I kind of decided to step away at that point.’
Donoso finds that song writing helps to empower her individuality and self-perspective ‘It’s like me, trying to kind of, I guess, share a powerful message through others.’ It is key element for the singer to write music that makes her, as well as others, feel confident and liberated as part of humanity.
‘What also expresses your true authentic self? And, and that’s when I kind of was like, Okay, I’m Latin, you know, like, let’s use this to my advantage. And it’s really funny, because what I thought was expressing myself, which was through the R&B music like was me, once I then found my, like, my reggaeton R&B sound, I was like, Oh, my gosh, this, this is me, you know.’
The artist discussed the true sentiment behind the lyrics of her new track ‘Candela’, which only took two hours to process and how it is based around empowering both men and women. ‘In this specific scenario is, it’s about a woman being really confident in a relationship, or an interaction between her and another man. Basically, my intention with the song was just yeah, to make people feel sexy and confident when they listen to her.’
Donoso mentioned that as an artist she feels she has control over people’s emotions, which is a really powerful role to have when an audience ‘listens to your soul.’ As well as striving in the music industry, Donoso is an advocate for mental health awareness after undergoing therapy due to the loss of her father.
‘I’ve had therapy for a very, very long time. And it’s taught me so much, and I have to credit therapy for helping me, you know, and, and for supporting me through some of the hardest moments of my life. And that’s something which I would want to share with people.’
Now working with Harley Therapy, a professional psychotherapy and counselling clinic, Donoso’s determined to make a difference with supporting others through personal struggles and help combat false representations in the media. ‘People look at me and see this, like, pink haired girl who looks properly like she lives this amazing, easy life. And it couldn’t be further from the truth. You know, I have a lot of struggles within my industry, I have a lot of personal struggles.’
Donoso’s ultimate goal is to further her career and love of music whilst inspiring others in her journey into the industry. ‘I also want to use the platform, which comes with being an artist to help people as I said, so that’s kind of on that side. My personal goal is happiness, and self-love.’
