HBO recently announced they will not be moving forward with another season of the hit series Lovecraft Country. The show rated 7.1 on IMDB has gained raving reviews after the first episode debuting on the 26th of August 2020.

“We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”

HBO’s statement to Deadline Hollywood

The Story

The horror series created by Misha Green is set in the 1950’s US and tells the story of an African American’s journey searching for his missing father. With an interest in Science fiction books, the main character discovers a whole new world he never realised existed beyond his books and imagination. Lovecraft Country takes a new twist from traditional horror series by added the real terror of racism. The storyline intertwines the true horror of racism that is rarely depicted on screen and combines this with the mystery of the spirit world. This gives the show more depth and certainly had viewers deeply invested in the characters, making it all the more disappointing that we won’t be seeing them again.

There has been an ongoing fight for representation in the film industry. It’s clear the industry needs to do better at bringing characters of colour into main roles but beyond this, we need people of colour in writers rooms, as directors and producers. We need a range of stories from different perspectives to be shared. We all deserve to feel seen and heard and the only way for this to happen is for platforms like HBO to push for more diverse shows.

There are incredible writers like Misha Green waiting to tell their stories that may be feeling discouraged when they see the lack of diversity within the industry and the little opportunities for black writers to really shine and take up space.

Fans have rallied together to show Misha Green how much they love and support her work urging her to pitch to other streaming sites and continue writing amazing stories.  However, HBO has been under scrutiny as to why the decision was made.

Misha Green comments  “it would have been unlike anything that’s ever been on TV”. Netflix I hope your listening.

We hope to see the next season somewhere else.
