September 11, 2021New York-based, Shilpa Yarlagadda launched her fine jewellery company back in 2017 from her university dorm room and has since been accessorising A-list celebrities including Emma Watson, Michelle Obama and many more.
The twenty-three-year-old ethically sources her jewellery for ‘Shiffon Co’ and provides female-founded businesses with a portion of her profits through mentorship and finances. Yarlagadda empowers women to follow their dreams as an entrepreneur and make a change in today’s society.
‘You can’t be what you can’t see, which is why I wanted to create a new visible and transparent model of funding for female entrepreneurs.’

Yarlagadda realised that a lot of the jewellery industry was dominated by males, so decided that she needed to be the change and make accessories designed for women to be made by women. ‘Throughout my studies and work experiences, I never saw that many women, which is something that bothered me.’

The entrepreneur contacted several Material Science and Robotics departments before launching her products to see if there was a cost-effective method to manufacturing her items. After having some insight into the mechanics behind the products, Yarlagadda visited the Diamond District in New York the find out about the commercial aspects to the business.
