Jemima Hunter
October 22, 2021From planting trees at age eight to founding the ‘Green Hope Foundation’ in 2012, Kehkashan Basu’s aim is to be the change for children’s rights, sustainable development, climate justice, and gender equality.
‘My parents also encouraged me to follow my passion and instead of buying expensive gifts, I spent my birthday money on planting a tree in our building’s garden.’
From a young age, Basu had an interest in helping to solve world issues, which led her to hold a press conference for the United Nations about sustainable development at the adolescent age of eleven.
‘Gradually I progressed from working on just the environment to working on the environment, society, peace, achieving equality across the world.’
With help from organisations and family, Basu achieved her dreams of making a difference by founding the ‘Green Hope Foundation’ which offers young individuals a networking community to participate in the sustainable development affair across many countries.
‘I founded Green Hope Foundation so that I could provide children, especially girls with the platform to learn about sustainability challenges and then how to take actions to mitigate these problems.’
Tips to take away:
Be passionate about your work
‘I’m really passionate about what I do. And I always believed that age has nothing to do with capability.’
Build connections and gain as much experience as possible
- Basu hasn’t stopped gaining experience since being a child, the more knowledge she has the more she can make a difference.
