Women only Gym goes viral on Tik Tok following backlash

The need for women-only gyms has been a discussion for many years . This is due to the discomfort women across the world have had to endure particularly in this case the inappropriate behaviour of male gym-goers.

The Kansas gym going viral on Tik Tok known as BLUSH  Fitness is made exclusively for women. Blush Fitness offers additional perks that may not be considered at gender-neutral gyms such as babysitting, high security with access to the gym only through a fob given to members, tinted windows and a broad selection of female personal trainers.

Tik Tok user and BLUSH gym member Heather Huesman posted the all women exclusive gym for her viewers to see the services available and the warm atmosphere at the gym. To her surprise, the video went viral hitting more than 6 million views. The video was followed by positive comments as well as starting a discussion amongst men feeling the gym is promoting segregation.

Speaking with Buzzfeed on the comments been made Huesman said  :

“I don’t think the gym promotes segregation at all. I think if someone is mad that there’s an all-women’s gym, it’s because they want women [in their co-ed gym] for a reason,” 

 Many women want a safe space to feel protected while they work out.

One of the other benefits of a women-only gym is the sense of community amongst women when gyms are often dominated by men. This can be intimidating for some women. Many ‘neutral’ spaces are dominated by men. Dealing with microaggressions, sexual assault, inappropriate comments in different spaces, women would like a space where they can feel powerful and fearless alongside other women. 

It can also be empowering to be in a space typically associated with men and seeing women working hard to better themselves in a welcoming environment. This is something BLUSH gym emphasises.

The benefits of an all-women gym certainly outweigh the complaints of segregation from men who seem to not have acknowledged the discomfort and fear women have had to deal with in a space created for men by men. It’s only fair that women have gyms for women by women and cater to the various needs that may differ from male-dominated gyms.
