Serena William’s launches Nike collection with Design crew

World renounced tennis player Serena Williams is onto her next business venture collaborating with Nike and 10 emerging designers from underrepresented backgrounds to create her latest collection. The collection is inspired by Serena Williams boldness on the tennis court. Her presence and talent command the court and her clothing allow her to stand out and feel ready to devour the game.

As a black woman, Serena Williams is aware of the inequalities on the court and off the court from how she has been depicted in the media to the lack of opportunities available for people of colour. Through this collaboration with Nike, Serena Williams is able to showcase talented designers from different backgrounds who may not have gotten to showcase their work on such a global scale.

Thanks to the help of Harlem Fashion row and New York fashion school Serena Williams has been able to scout the very best talent that truly understands her vision and will help her bring her ideas to life.

“I feel like they were able to communicate my aesthetics very well through the silhouettes and patterns that they brought and in the colors as well,” Williams says. “It’s something really fun. It’s definitely bold. And it’s definitely different—but it’s also very wearable. I think that’s also really important.”

While making waves in the world of tennis is Serena Williams number one passion, she has been an innovator in the world of fashion and is using her designs to speak on important issues, employee a diverse range of designers and make impactful change.

“The Serena Williams Design Crew is a collective of dreamers, innovators and creators. Each year, a group of apprentices partner with Serena and Nike — with the aim to develop and inspire the next generation of talent. The result? Game-changing work and a brighter future for design.“

The first SWDC Collection will be available on Nike’s website with a variety of items from quality and uniquely designed performance wear, wearable and innovative streetwear and footwear.
