Where would the A List Celebrities Be Without Her? JoJo Gomez – A Dancing Prodigy
Jemima Hunter
June 14, 2021Twenty-six-year-old, celebrity choreographer and professional dancer, JoJo Gomez hits 1.7 million YouTube subscribers as she freestyles her way to the top.
The South Hadley, MA, born dancer was always determined to be involved in the creative industry, at only age eleven Gomez was trained to a professional standard in all classical aspects of dance. ‘My parents recognized how serious I was and urged me to get more training.’
In her late teenage years, Gomez decided to take a leap of faith by moving to L.A. to actualize her aspirations in the industry. On arrival, Gomez and her family members set out to secure an agent. After seeing an open call at a talent agency, the dancer auditioned and was signed the next day.
Gomez was walking on air, when she was hired to perform on her first professional stage, as a tribute for Britney Spears at the VMA’s in 2011. The streak continued as Gomez was featured in X Factor, America’s Got Talent and The Voice for Justin Bieber. ‘You can make $1,500 to $3,500 per performance, but landing a job requires constant training and auditioning.’
After being denied on several jobs for her figure and weight, Gomez decided ‘that’s just not what I believe in’, so she decided to create a business of her own without fighting for validation off employers. In 2014, Gomez created routine dance content for social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram that led to a passionate following from the public. The viewers began to ask for tutorials, which later led to Gomez’s career in choreography. ‘I thought if I posted my routines, maybe someone else would feel inspired.’
The more she posted, the better feedback she got, with more potential clients rolling in wanting to learn the trick of the trade. The Millennium Dance Complex requested for Gomez to stand in for a class, which soon became a regular occurrence. This immediately opened up opportunities for Gomez, like being a featured dancer for ‘New Thang’ by Red Fu and choreographing Tinashe’s music video in 2017.
Now the popper and locker has A List celebrities yearning to be next in line for lessons, whilst she continues to learn, progress and motivate aspiring dancers.
‘I just want to keep inspiring people along the way and lifting others up with my passion.’
