The Austrian born entrepreneur, Amir Akta created a marketplace in 2018, to make art accessible and have additional curator support personalised to the customer base. ‘Return on Art’ became most successful during lockdown, when clients were looking to do up their interiors. The company only takes half the cut that galleries would which puts artists in a better position to share and sell their work.

Being taken to galleries in his childhood led Akta to fall in love with the idea that you’re supporting an artist when buying artwork, whilst also investing in something that will bring you joy so long as it is on the wall.

‘I wanted to create something I would love to use myself and I was never fan of the buying experience at a gallery. In addition, after extensive market research and analysis, a curated online platform just seemed more viable.’

Find a gap in the market

As a devoted lover of art, Akta was frustrated by the expense and inaccessibility of art as a student. The entrepreneur found the physical galleries had a small offering of features and the platforms online had minimal quality control and guidance, so solved the problem with ‘Return on Art.’

Akta aims to ‘find artists we can actively support, nurture and create a stronger market for’, to some extent focusing on emerging artists but not exclusively. The platform is helpful for artists as well as customers looking for specific designs.

What’s the aim of your company? Who is your target market?

‘The beautiful thing about art is that it is extremely subjective. I personally believe that the value of art is two sided. There is the one side, which is extremely intangible – the emotional aspect of collecting art.’
