Former monk-turned motivational guru Jay Shetty | RNZ

Fresh out of business school and having been inspired by a monk invited to do a talk at his school Jay Shetty passed up on the world of business and dedicated his life to becoming a monk for three years.

The man behind the book ‘Thinks Like a Monk’ got much of his inspiration from trying out different paths in life in search of meaning and fulfilment from drugs, toxic relationships, corporate life and probably one of his best life decisions, becoming a monk. As a Monk Shetty was separated from worldly pleasures and distractions, forcing him to confront some internal pain and find peace and fulfilment within himself. It was all inside of him the whole time. Following on from this experience Shetty continued to meditate and find peace within and wanted to travel to find more life lessons and also to help others find the same fulfilment he now finally had after searching all his life. This is where he found his purpose.

What can we learn from Jay Shetty?

  • “Shetty endless advocates for growth through intentional self-love, self-awareness and empathy for yourself and others. Here are some quotes from the coach on how to live a life of purpose. “
  •  “Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but make sure it does not replace you as the driver.”
  • “When you want to ‘put somebody in their place’, put yourself in their place first.”
  • “When nobody else celebrates you, learn to celebrate yourself. When nobody else compliments you, then compliment yourself. It’s not up to other people to keep you encouraged. It’s up to you. Encouragement should come from the inside.”
