Twenty-four-year-old Kofi McCalla has been encapsulating fashion, youth culture and streetwear fashion for over five years, showcased on his YouTube channel ‘Unknown Vlogs.’ The influencer and entrepreneur grew up around London however, McCalla did not really enjoy this way of life especially because he found it hard to settle. However, the upside was that his networking skills greatly improved which jumpstarted his career in vlogging.

The channel was born after McCalla began videoing himself and friends trying on unaffordable clothing in his teenage years. With a love for fashion, McCalla started educating himself about the industry and researched all of London’s new hot spots, especially those areas which fostered the creative industries.  ‘I try to create my own style before trends pollute it. So, I research in my spare time old runway pieces from Gucci and especially Dolce & Gabbana AW 2002 and pick pieces I like. Then try to find cheap alternatives online.’

Before leaving his law studies at The University of Westminster, McCalla proceeded to post videos on social media and has become a pivotal influencer for the men’s fashion community. Starting out from humble beginnings, McCalla understood the value of luxury items and was delighted when he could afford to stock his own wardrobe with these luxury items.

Co-founding his own fashion label with Soho Kids two years ago, gave McCalla a proper introduction to working directly in the fashion industry. Romana and McCalla originally designed the brand to combine sustainability with a re-purposed vintage collection. Making changes in the community was also a big part of their goal;  they even decided to collaborate with EJDER to urge youths to vote by scanning QR codes on the items of clothing.

Now McCalla has a loyal following and his determination has opened opportunities to collaborate with established designers and travel to different destinations to create content. Since building an enterprise and establishing himself as a household name, McCalla aims to inspire individuals and mentor youths on how to make a dream a reality.

‘It’s like when you put your oxygen mask on before helping others. I’ve put myself in a position to help others now.’

Educate yourself. Start printing on Champion, and as long as it has a meaning and brings purpose, people will come to you. Like they say, Rome wasn’t built in the day, so another thing. Be willing to spend years fighting ups and downs until you make it successful.’
